Geneva, April 6 (Xinhua) –The REPORT of the WHO Expert Review on TRADITIONAL Chinese Medicine for COVID-19 has been released, which clearly affirms the effectiveness and safety of TRADITIONAL Chinese medicine for COVID-19 treatment and encourages WHO member States to consider the possibility of using TRADITIONAL Chinese medicine for COVID-19 treatment within their healthcare systems and regulatory frameworks. The WHO Expert Review of TRADITIONAL Chinese Medicine for COVID-19 was held by videoconference from 28 February to 2 March.Twenty-one international experts from six WHO regional offices held discussions on clinical practice, scientific research and evidence-based evaluation, exchanged and evaluated reports on COVID-19 treatment shared by Chinese experts, and formed an expert evaluation report.According to the report, the results show that TRADITIONAL Chinese medicine is effective in the treatment of COVID-19, and it is particularly effective for mild and common cases according to clinical efficacy indicators, which can help reduce the risk of mild or common cases becoming severe. For mild and common cases, TCM can shorten the time to virus clearance, clinical symptom relief and hospital stay when used as an additional intervention compared with conventional treatment alone. In addition to conventional treatment, intervention with traditional Chinese medicine is not only well tolerated, but also similar in safety to conventional treatment alone.Early use of TRADITIONAL Chinese medicine can improve clinical outcomes for patients with mild and common forms of COVID-19.The report recommends that, given the evolving nature of the global COVID-19 pandemic, WHO should share the findings of this assessment with Member States in a timely manner.Encourages Member States to consider the possibility of using TRADITIONAL Chinese medicine to treat COVID-19 in their health care systems and regulatory frameworks;Encourage the sharing of experiences and lessons, especially the positive experiences gained through organized Chinese medicine research programmes and clinical experiences from China. The report commended the Chinese government and researchers for their enormous investment and efforts in increasing knowledge and developing treatments for COVID-19 since the outbreak, and acknowledged the need for further research on the treatment of COVID-19 with traditional Chinese medicine.Progress has also laid a solid foundation for international collaboration and cooperation that will lead to more effective and appropriate use of TRADITIONAL Chinese medicine for COVID-19 treatment, benefiting the health of all, the report said.Sichuan online official wechat source: Xinhua News Agency editor: Lin Shuang proofread: Yu Pu review: Lai Yongqiang
